Fungi Foray

Mushroom Identification Walks

Introduction to Mushroom ID and Fungi Foraging

The magical world of fungi is strange and fascinating, with its own biological kingdom. Many of us find it meditative and addictive. It captures the imagination of young and old.

Learn how to identify edible, non-edible and poisonous varieties. Discover why mycelium is so important to our planets existence.

This is an introductory level course which will focus on how to identify mushrooms safely and grow your skills and confidence.
We will take a close look at the various features and structures of the fungi we find so as learn how to distinguish them from other species. Bear in mind there are over 10,000 species, Matt will teach you how to notice the various details and how to dissect a mushroom to help you in your detective work of identifying which one you have. Habit is also key to understanding fungi and this will also be studied in depth during the course.

As expected, there are no guarantees we will find edible species or sufficient quantities for people to take home. Mushrooms are fickle and play by their own rules. Ordinarily Matt would spend the day before mushroom hunting to guarantee a wild mushroom cook up at the end of the walk. Due to COVID restrictions we cannot do a communal cook up at the end this year as we usually do. Hopefully we will be back on track for 2021 to finish with a cook up and some prepared wild mushroom based nibbles.

Matt will be giving out a lot of information that he has learned over the years from study, other mycologists and mushroom experts, we highly recommend bringing along a notepad and pen.

2021 October dates will be released later.
This is because the mushroom season is weather dependent and fluctuates every year. The season of 2018 started very late due to a long hot summer and little rainfall, and 2020 seemed to hit early. We will be running mushroom walks next year and will post the dates on social media and our website nearer the time. Customers with gift vouchers will be contacted first and given priority booking.
