Little Petherick

Little Petherick

Little Petherick Creek, a tidal tributary of the River Camel, is a beautiful green valley between Padstow and Wadebridge. It is one of the quietest locations that we run walks at and has a diverse range of habitats. It boasts one of the best examples of a salt marsh wild larder, as well as hedgerow, woodland, grassland, and some coastal edibles. The views over the Camel Estuary are amazing!

The village has a historic 14th century church and we meet in the car park next to it.  There used to be a tidal corn mill at Sea Mills in St Issey and the remains of the mill's old sea wall are still visible today even though the mill pond is now filled with silt. If we are lucky we may also see wading birds such as herons, curlews and egrets!

Being just three miles from Padstow and five miles from Wadebridge makes this a convenient spot.

Distance: 2 miles

Picture
Roughly 2 miles, with no steep hills. We walk at a gentle pace, frequently stopping to discuss the flora.

This walk needs to be timed with the tide times as the footpath along the edge of the creek is underwater at high tide. The edge of the creek is quite muddy so ensure you have appropriate footwear. The footpath on the foreshore passes over an area of bedrock which is slippery when wet.

Duration: 4 hours

The walk usually lasts around 4 hours, but this can vary depending on group size and speed levels, plus I do get easily carried away and often run over time so if you need to leave by a certain time please let me know at the beginning.

Dogs

This is a dog friendly location. Large dogs may need help over about 3 of the stiles. Medium-sized dogs should be able to squeeze through gaps.

Parking & Facilities

Picture
The car park is 50p, cash only! Please note there are no toilets. The small car park is busy on Sunday mornings and when other church services are on.

Meeting Place

St Petroc Minor Church car park, which is down the lane behind the Village Hall. Look for me carrying a basket!

What to Bring

- Plate or bowl and fork or spoon for the cook-up at the end
- Something to drink (we mean water not alcohol, but we won't judge!)

Optional extras:
- Something to sit on at the end (a blanket or coat if you don't fancy sitting on sand or grass)
- A basket or bag to collect things
- Notepad to take notes
- Camera to take visual notes
- Snacks (if you need tiding over until the food at the end of the walk)

What to Wear

Please wear sturdy footwear and dress for the weather. The footpath passes over an area of bedrock which is slippery when wet. I would recommend wellies, or shoes you don't mind getting wet.

Directions

Little Petherick is on the busy A389. The small church car park is down the lane behind the Village Hall. The turning is directly between St Petroc Minor Church and the Village Hall, and it pops up on you quite suddenly and the road is narrow, so be prepared as you enter the dip! It is opposite The Old Mill House bistro.

Little Petherick, Padstow, PL27 7QT - this postcode just takes you to the village. It looks like the whole village has the same postcode!

Important Information

- During the walk we will get to stop and nibble on raw wild foods. Please always double check with me that you have selected the correct plant before eating our finds. We will also handle some inedible and poisonous species.
- Some plants are not suitable for pregnant women so please let me know beforehand or give me a discreet nod if that is the case.
